In the footsteps of Jopie!

We would like to invite you to come and explore the world of the well-known Frisian artist, self-taught Jopie Huisman. A fascinating tour package has been put together in and around Workum, the city where Jopie
was born and where he lived and worked. Workum is one of the eleven cities associated with Friesland’s famous ice skating event.

The interesting Jopie Huisman Museum will provide you with an introduction to his work. The museum houses his work and arranges annual exhibitions on a particular theme. In the museum café you will be treated to a cup of coffee and some famous traditional Frisian ‘oranjekoek’ (orange cake).

The bicycle tour takes you through the world depicted in many of his works. The clear route description guides you to the places where Jopie did his painting and drawing. You can hire a bicycle if needed.

Along the way you will pass through Allingawier, a famous village along the Aldfaerserf-route. Here you enter a nostalgic world, a world of workshops and people from trades of yore. A tasty country lunch will be served in the Izeren Ko with its characterful ambience.

The tour continues along the sea dike to the beautiful little village of Gaast. On the other side of the dike the IJsselmeer stretches out into the distance, edged by reeded banks and a coastline full of birdlife.

On your return to Workum the town is ready to offer you lots of opportunities for shopping, relaxing on a terrace or sampling the food offered by the local eateries.
